Get Smart About Credit Day at UT Arlington Teaches Students Wise Credit Use

College of Business Once Again Ranks Among Top North American Business Schools for Research Activity
October 21, 2008—For the second time, the College of Business at UT Arlington has earned a ranking among the top 100 business schools in North America based on research contributions in 22 select academic journals. The ranking was determined by the number of research contributions published between 2006-2008. The study places UT Arlington ahead of schools such as the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University, The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, and The Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas. Read more...
Goolsby Scholars Bring Johnson & Johnson Leader to Campus
October 20, 2008—Alan LeBlanc, an executive with Johnson & Johnson, will talk about ethical leadership with the medical company’s principles as a jumping-off point for discussion at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in room 101 of College Hall, 503 W. Third St. The speech, sponsored by the Goolsby Scholars, is free and open to the public.
LeBlanc will address how the $61 billion company has grown its sales and market share for 123 consecutive years in an ethical way.
“The Goolsby Leadership Academy at UT Arlington is able to draw such beacons of ethical leadership in the business world like Alan Leblanc because anyone who knows the Academy and what it stands for knows that the future ethical business leaders in the country and perhaps the world are sitting in the Goolsby classrooms,” said Andy Hines, a Goolsby Scholar and UT Arlington student.
LeBlanc started as a sales representative with Johnson & Johnson in 1984. His latest post with the company has been as regional corporate account director for Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems. In his current role, his job is to coordinate the efforts of the individual Johnson & Johnson franchises at Texas Health Resources in Arlington and the Baylor Health Care System in Dallas. He spent the first 10 years of his career as a naval aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps.
The Goolsby Leadership Academy, established in 2003, is designed to transform a select group of students into future leaders. The program offers rigorous study in: developing leadership skills, decision making, emotional competence and motivation, ethics, personal integrity, character development, goal-setting, self-measurement, performance measurement, group dynamics and team building.
Dr. Chandra Subramaniam Appointed Chair of the Accounting Department
October 8, 2008—Dr. Daniel Himarios, Dean of the College of Business at The University of Texas at Arlington, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Chandra Subramaniam, Associate Professor of Accounting, as Chair of the Department of Accounting. Dr. Subramaniam assumed this administrative post after the previous Chair, Dr. Larry Walther, retired from UT Arlington. “Dr. Subramaniam has repeatedly demonstrated remarkable leadership ability and commitment to the college,” said the Dean. “He is a gifted academic and skillful administrator. UT Arlington Finance Society Earns Prestigious Distinction
August 7, 2008—The UT Arlington Finance Society, the University’s chapter of the Financial Management Association International (FMAI), has earned the association’s 2008 Superior Chapter Designation, a distinction awarded to less than five percent of the more than 350 FMAI chapters around the world.
The UT Arlington Finance Society is comprised of students with a common interest in a career in finance. The chapter has been ranked in the top ten for the last ten years. The primary goal of the Finance Society is to increase the value of a student’s academic experience, to create job opportunities, and to provide students an engaging social outlet.
“The student leaders and members of Finance Society have earned this recognition,” says faculty advisor Dr. Vincent Apilado, Professor of Finance. “I’m pleased their dedication and hard work has been acknowledged at the highest level of the Financial Management Association International.”
To receive FMA’s Superior Chapter Designation, Finance Society had to meet a number of specific performance criteria, demonstrate excellent chapter management, and excel in providing members program activities.

Hunt Company Executive Addresses Summer Business Grads
August 4, 2008—Read Harry Dombroski's speech to the Summer 2008 College of Business graduates. Mr. Dombroski is Senior Vice President for financial administration at Hunt Consolidated Inc., an affiliated entity of Hunt Oil Company. Mr. Dombroski is responsible for coordinating capital and investment decisions, as well as overall planning for the Hunt organization, and serves as a trustee for the company’s medical, pension and 401K plans. Mr. Dombroski is a member of the College of Business Advisory Board.”
Research Takes Economics Professor Many Places
July 10, 2008—Dr. Mike Ward, Associate Professor of Economics, recently returned from a stint as a visiting researcher at the ZEW, a non-profit economic research institute located in Mannheim, Germany. At the ZEW, Dr. Ward investigated how Internet access may have increased the pace of academic research. Specifically, he examined citation patterns in major journals when economists obtained access to JSTOR, a major journal archive site. Dr. Ward found that researchers cite more often to journals when they obtain electronic access to this archive. Also, there is evidence that access to this archive increases researchers' publication output and the quality of their output.

After 30+ years, Marketing Chair Dr. Carl McDaniel Stepping Down
May 28, 2008—This May, Marketing Professor Carl McDaniel stepped down as chair of the Marketing Department, a position he has held since 1977.
Dr. Larry Chonko, the Thomas McMahon Professor in Business Ethics, has assumed this administrative post.
Daniel Himarios, Dean of the College of Business, praised Dr. McDaniel for his service, saying "I've had the pleasure of working with Carl for the last 25 years. He has been an outstanding leader for both the Marketing Department and the College. So much of the growth and strength of our marketing program is owed to Carl, and I thank him for his outstanding work." Himarios added, "At the same time, I am so pleased to have Dr. Larry Chonko assume the chair. Larry's vision and experience are ideal for this critical role."
This spring, the Marketing Department ranked 44th in the Top 100 Business School Research Rankings conducted by the School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas. This ranking places the UT Arlington Marketing Department ahead of such institutions as Notre Dame, Purdue, Baylor and Texas A & M in research activity.
College of Business Ranks Among Top North American Business Schools for Research Activity
May 23, 2008—The College of Business at UT Arlington has earned a ranking among the top 100 business schools in North America based on research contributions in 22 select academic journals from 2005-2008. The study places UT Arlington ahead of universities such as Wake Forest, Texas Tech, and University of South Florida.
According to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the world's largest professional accreditation association for business programs,there are 1792 business schools in North America. This ranking places the College of Business in the top six percent of North American business schools in research activity.
"We are pleased to earn such a notable ranking," says College of Business Dean Daniel Himarios. "The College of Business faculty have consistently maintained a high level of research activity and this ranking recognizes their efforts."
The Top 100 Business School Research Rankings is conducted by the School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas. The 22 journals comprising the survey include the top journals in the fields of accounting, finance, international business, marketing, management, management science, information systems, and operations management.
UT Arlington also ranked among North American business schools for research activity within specific disciplines. The Marketing Department ranked 44th, ahead of such institutions as Notre Dame, Purdue, Baylor, and Texas A&M. The Management Department is also placed in the Top 100 ranking for research activity published in top management journals.
CEO of Texas Health Resources Addresses Business Grads
Read Douglas D. Hawthorne's speech to the May 2008 College of Business graduates. Mr. Hawthorne is president and CEO of Texas Health Resources, one of the largest nonprofit health care delivery systems in the United States, serving more than 6.3 million people living in 16 counties in north central Texas. Mr. Hawthorne is a member of the College of Business Advisory Board.
Dean Himarios Establishes fund for Faculty Fellowships and Research
May 22, 2008—College of Business Dean Daniel Himarios announced the establishment of the Dean’s Faculty Excellence Endowment, a $4 million fund created to provide perpetual funding opportunities to support faculty fellowships and summer research grants for excelling faculty in the College of Business.
The Dean’s Faculty Excellence Endowment is the newest permanently endowed fund at the College of Business. “Endowed funds are critical to the college’s success in attracting and retaining top-tier faculty and for recruiting high quality students,” Dean Himarios said. “We are committed to significantly increasing the number of our endowments to support a high level academic and research activity within the college.” The college currently operates 66 permanently endowed funds to support research, faculty posts and scholarships.
